The Parliamentary Budget Officer’s (PBO) report confirms what Pathways Alliance has been saying all along: an emissions cap is a production cap. To comply with the regulations, the PBO estimates that production will need to decrease by 4.9% between 2030 and 2032 from projected levels, resulting in the potential loss of 54,400 jobs and a $20.5 billion reduction in nominal GDP.
Canada is facing economic challenges. Rising costs, stagnant incomes, and ongoing uncertainty are causing families across the country to struggle. Now, with the ongoing trade war with the United States, Canada’s economy faces an even greater threat. Pathways reiterates its call for the Government of Canada to abandon the Emissions Cap Regulations and to instead focus on enabling the legislative, fiscal, and regulatory reforms needed to sustain the economic viability of Canada’s oil and gas industry.
