School Success Lead

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

Reporting to the Education Department Manager, the School Success Lead shall work closely with the Matawa First Nation Schools and community stakeholders. The main responsibilities of the School Success Lead are to support the development and implementation of individual school success plans, ensuring strategies and evaluation tools are in place to improve literacy, numeracy and performance standards. With other PASS staff, the School Success Lead also assists schools to identify and implement strategies to engage parents and communities, and to support staff retention and recruitment.

SCOPE

As a member of the Pathways to Achieve Student Success (PASS) team, the School Success Lead shall provide professional direction and support to the Matawa Education Department and Matawa First Nation schools in the areas of program development and implementation, school success planning and implementation, regional and student assessment, and professional development for staff in Matawa schools.

The School Success Lead shall assist in the continued development and implementation of strategies to support school and student success. This will include the facilitation of professional learning communities (PLC’s) for Matawa administrators and participation in PASS and Education Department communication activities. The School Success Lead will also provide on-going, general assistance to principals from the Matawa schools in matters related to school administration and management.

As a member of the PASS interdisciplinary team, the School Success Lead shall provide strategies and support for the development and implementation of effective school success plans, and the review the existing school success plans within the Matawa schools. In addition, the School Success Lead will assist with the collection and use of data obtained through these methods of assessment to inform decision-making related to instructional practices, student assessment, and school success planning.

To support teacher recruitment and retention, the School Success Lead will facilitate the posting of positions in Matawa schools to online websites and will coordinate the annual Matawa Teacher of the Year Awards. The School Success Lead will coordinate the annual review and revision of the Matawa Teachers’ Handbook.

The School Success Lead will be subjected to highly confidential material in relation to Matawa Schools, student information, assessment results etc. The School Success Lead shall conduct themselves in a highly professional manner and must adhere to the appropriate guidelines regarding confidentiality as per Matawa First Nations policies and procedures.

The School Success Lead will continue to stay up-to-date on current research and best practices related to instruction and school success in order to support improved student and school performance. This will include on-going networking with other First Nation organizations, provincial ministries, the federal government, and other outside professional agencies and organizations.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Assist with the administration of the Matawa Pathways to Achieve Student Success (PASS) Program

Main Activities

  • Network with Matawa schools and Education Authorities to support the ongoing development and implementation of school success planning and recommending programs for the schools
  • Assist and provide input with the Matawa schools and Education Authorities to set realistic student achievement goals
  • Gather and analyze school data to provide support to the Matawa schools to improve student achievement
  • Assist with the development, review and implementation of an annual Matawa regional education success plan, incorporating goals identified through school success plans and the regional strategic plan for education
  • Provide internal program reporting as required
  • Network with other members of the Matawa PASS team to provide input into the development of performance measures, literacy and numeracy planning strategies, early learning strategies, and strategies to support student retention and success
  • Assist with the preparation of reports and presentation materials for various audiences
  1. Support the continued development of effective instructional strategies in school success planning, literacy, numeracy and performance measures.

Main Activities

  • Review and assess current school success models (eg. effective school model), instructional practices, resources and standards in Matawa First Nation schools
  • Identify appropriate strategies to support effective school success planning and learning in Matawa schools
  • Share successful practices within each Matawa school, as well as current research on effective administrative and school leadership practices
  • Identify annual training and professional development needs of Matawa principals, and coordinate related online and/or on-site support to meet these needs
  • Coordinate Principals’ participation in regional activities (eg. provincial System Implementation and Monitoring sessions, face-to-face meetings or training)
  • Provide professional training and support, both formal and informal, to Matawa school administrators
  • Provide online professional learning communities for Matawa school administrators
  • Provide online and on-site support to principals and education authorities related to program administration and school management.
  • Provide support to the Principals’ Working Group
  1. Support principals with the administration of standardized student assessments Main Activities
  • Review existing indicators and related data sources to ensure student achievement for each school is included in school success planning
  • Recommend relevant modifications to current school success models based on research and best practices that could have a positive impact on the effectiveness and success of Matawa Schools
  • Support principals to implement strategies to improved school and student success
  1. Teacher Retention and Recruitment Main Activities
  • Post job opportunities for Matawa schools and the Education Department on the Jobs in Education and Education Canada websites
  • Coordinate the annual Matawa Teacher of the Year awards
  • Facilitate the annual revision of the Matawa Teacher Handbook, in collaboration with other PASS staff, and distribution in electronic and/or print format to the Matawa schools
  1. Network with external agencies and organizations Main Activities
  • Maintain and continue building relationships, both formal and informal, with universities, government departments, publishers, and external organizations to support the development of effective school success planning in Matawa First Nation schools
  • Maintain and continue building effective relationships with Matawa First Nation schools and Education Authorities
  1. Perform other related duties as required

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge

The incumbent must have proficient knowledge in the following areas:

  • A degree in Education, and 5 years experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Principal qualifications and successful experience as a school principal, preferably in a First Nation school
  • Knowledge and understanding of First Nation and Ontario education systems
  • Experience in school success planning and development of School Success programming
  • Knowledge of strategies to support school success in School Success and learning
  • Experience and understanding of school success strategies and intervention models to support student success and learning at elementary and secondary levels
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with school staff, parents, administration, government and First Nation organizations
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality
  • Knowledge of Ojibway is an asset

Skills

The incumbent must demonstrate the following skills:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and leadership skills
  • Valid Ontario driver’s license

Personal Attributes

The incumbent must maintain strict confidentiality in performing the duties of School Success Facilitator. The incumbent must also demonstrate the following personal attributes:

  • Must be able to perform work duties with minimal supervision
  • Must be willing to travel as required
  • Must provide a current Criminal Record Check and tuberculosis skin test
  • Must be a current member in good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers

WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical Demands

The School Success Lead may have to travel throughout the community in all weather. They may have to lift, carry and manage equipment and supplies. They may have to work odd or long

hours at a time to complete special requests or projects. The School Success Lead may have to spend long hours sitting and using office equipment, computers and attending meetings.

Environmental Conditions

The Matawa Building may be a busy facility. The School Success Lead may have to manage a number of projects at one time, and may be interrupted frequently. The School Success Lead may find the environment to be busy, noisy and will need excellent organizational and time and stress management skills to complete the required tasks.

Sensory Demands

Sensory demands can include reading and use of the computer, which may cause eyestrain and occasional headaches.

Mental Demands

The School Success Lead will have to manage a number of requests and projects at one time. They must be aware of Tribal Council business in the communities and any and all relevant legislation, policies and procedures. They may have to complete a number of tasks and responsibilities at one time, and must be prepared to deal with emergencies and stressful situations at any time.
