But Scugog Island First Nation also says other governments ‘shirking’ responsibility to consult with MSIFN

The Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation (MSIFN) has applauded Pickering council’s vote to rescind its support for a potential airport.

However, in the same statement, the Scugog Island First Nation stressed the municipality, along with all other levels of government, have shirked legislative responsibilities to consult with the MSIFN on the project.

In an April 24 vote, Pickering councillors voted 6-1 in favour to officially declare the municipality does not support an airport. All members voted in favour of the motion except Mayor Kevin Ashe.

“The Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation were pleased to see Pickering city council members withdraw previous support for an airport in Pickering by voting in favour of a motion in ‘opposition to a Pickering airport and utilization of resources’ on April 24,” said the Scugog Island First Nation in a May 2 online statement.
