Six First Nations communities and province set stage for negotiations on new and sustainable First Nation Development Agreement

FREDERICTON (GNB) – The provincial government and six Mi’gmaq First Nations agreed today to not litigate issues related to the terminated tax agreements but to focus on implementing a fair and mutually respectful negotiating process and positive dialogue toward a new, sustainable and beneficial First Nation Development Agreement.

The parties jointly presented the court with a consent order setting out the commitment of the province, the six Mi’gmaq First Nations and their chiefs to a path forward with clear timelines for negotiation and dialogue.

“I want to express my thanks to the chiefs for working together with us to get to this point,” said Aboriginal Affairs Minister Arlene Dunn. “We understand there is a great deal of work ahead of us, but we are committed to working collaboratively with First Nations leaders to achieve sustainable agreements that work for them and for the province.”

The provincial government and each of the six Mi’gmaq First Nations will work in the coming months on starting the negotiations focused on collectively working towards concluding a First Nation Development Agreement.
