Description: The Assembly of First Nations is seeking an experienced and motivated individual to lead key conservation initiatives, conduct expert analysis, and provide recommendations for policy development, interpretation, and application for the inclusion of First Nations conservation leadership. The candidate should have a sound understanding of how First Nations currently participate in federal, provincial, and territorial conservation and stewardship legislation, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and growing efforts to recognize and support the creation of Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCAs) and First Nations guardian networks. Experience working in international contexts, such as the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) or the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) would be a strong asset.

(1) of the Canadian Human Rights Act.

Qualifications: Applicants must possess:

  • A post-secondary degree directly related to environmental science, geography, or political/social sciences with 5+ years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A minimum of 2+ years of positive experience working with First Nations and/or First Nations programs and policies.
  • Advanced knowledge. understanding, and demonstrated expertise, with respect to First Nations led conservation initiatives including species at risk conservation, Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCAs) and First Nations Guardianship along with a strong understanding of Canadian and international legislative and policy development and jurisprudence in this area.
  • Demonstrated experience researching and analyzing large sets of complex and changing data, and communicating it concisely, ensuring First Nations leadership and other stakeholders understand findings and recognize significance.
  • Ability to work well with others, both inside and outside of the organization, and demonstrated interpersonal skills, professionalism, teamwork, and judgement.
  • Advanced time management, planning & organizational skills, and attention to detail.
  • English is the working language although the ability to communicate effectively in French or any Indigenous language would also be an asset.
