Retail trade, November 2019

In November, retail sales rose 0.9% to $51.5 billion, largely offsetting the 1.1% decline in October. The increase was primarily attributable to higher sales at motor vehicle and parts dealers and food and beverage stores, both of which were down in October.

Annual Head Office Survey, 2018

Despite head office closures in several sectors, including retail, the number of head offices increased moderately (+0.3%) to 2,737 in 2018, and head office employment rose slightly (+0.1%) to 228,291 employees. The addition of new head offices for cannabis companies was one factor driving this increase.

The Retail Services Price Index (RSPI) increased 1.2% in the third quarter, following a 0.4% decline in the previous quarter. Margins were up in 6 of the 10 major retail subsectors surveyed.

Wholesale Services Price Index, third quarter 2019

Quarter over quarter, the Wholesale Services Price Index (WSPI) declined 1.7% in the third quarter, led primarily by petroleum and petroleum products merchant wholesalers (-13.4%), followed by machinery, equipment and supplies merchant wholesalers (-2.4%), and miscellaneous merchant wholesalers (-4.5%).
