Job vacancies, third quarter 2023
Job vacancies fell by 69,900 (-9.0%) to 706,100 in the third quarter, marking the fifth straight quarterly decline from the record high reached in the second quarter of 2022 (990,900).
Investment in building construction, October 2023
Investment in building construction rose 2.7% to $19.4 billion in October. The residential sector grew 3.9% to $13.4 billion, while investment in the non-residential sector was essentially flat, remaining at $6.0 billion.
New Housing Price Index, November 2023
The national index declined 0.2% in November. Prices were down or unchanged in 25 of the 27 census metropolitan areas (CMAs) surveyed.

College finances in the second year of the pandemic, 2021/2022
In 2021/2022, despite the ongoing challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, colleges collectively reported a $158.8 million budget surplus. This was lower than the $336.1 million surplus in 2020/2021. In the five years before the start of the pandemic (2015/2016 to 2019/2020), colleges posted an average annual surplus of $159.0 million. All dollar figures in this release are expressed in 2022 constant dollars to factor for inflation, which enables comparisons across time.
Railway carloadings, October 2023
In October, the volume of freight carried by Canadian railways amounted to 32.6 million tonnes, down 1.3% from October 2022 levels, marking the sixth straight month of year-over-year decline. Increases in loadings of potash and some energy products helped to offset a steep decline in grain shipments.
