Government finance statistics, first quarter 2022
The Canadian general government recorded a deficit of $17.0 billion in the first quarter of 2022. Tax revenues continued to grow (+8.3%) to reach $188.0 billion, linked to sustained growth in nominal gross domestic product (GDP), while retroactive salary adjustments tempered the improvement in the net operating balance. Compared with the first quarter of 2021, the deficit fell by $28.8 billion, mainly attributable to the federal government.
Monthly estimates of business openings and closures, March 2022
In March 2022, the number of active businesses (-0.2%; -1,927) decreased for the second consecutive month but remained above its February 2020 pre-COVID-19 pandemic level. This decrease was entirely due to the decline in the opening rate from 4.8% in February to 4.6% in March, as the business closure rate remained unchanged at 4.8%.

Aircraft movement statistics: Major airports, April 2022
In April, aircraft movements at Canada’s major airports totalled 398,724, an increase of 15.7% from April 2021. The total in April 2022 represents over four-fifths (82.2%) of the number recorded for the same month in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic, and is an improvement from the three-quarters (74.2%) recovery observed in March.
Monthly civil aviation statistics, April 2022
Major Canadian airlines carried 4.7 million passengers on scheduled and charter services in April 2022, almost nine times the number of passengers carried in April 2021. Airlines have now recovered two-thirds (66.2%) of the passenger level reported in April 2019, prior to the pandemic, an improvement from the 55.2% proportion reported in March 2022.
Poultry and egg statistics, June 2022
Data on stocks of frozen eggs and poultry meats, as well as edible dried egg products, are now available for June. Data on the placements of hatchery chicks and turkey poults are available for May 2022, and data on egg production are available for April 2022.
