Canada’s balance of international payments, first quarter 2022

Canada’s current account balance (on a seasonal adjusted basis) recorded a $5.0 billion surplus in the first quarter of 2022 after posting a small deficit of $137 million in the previous quarter. In the financial account (unadjusted for seasonal variation), portfolio investment generated an unprecedented inflow of funds of $119.7 billion in the first quarter.

Businesses expected to face a variety of obstacles in the short term related to rising costs, hiring and recruitment, and supply chains. Nearly two-fifths expected to raise prices over the next three months, and over three-quarters expected to retain the same number of employees.

Monthly estimates of business openings and closures, February 2022

In February 2022, the number of active businesses decreased (-0.4%; -3,555) compared with the previous month for the first time since May 2020. This decrease was largely driven by an increase in the business closure rate, from 4.1% in January to 5.0% in February. The business opening rate held steady at 4.9%.
