Canada’s balance of international payments, first quarter 2024
Canada’s current account balance (on a seasonal adjusted basis) posted a $5.4 billion deficit in the first quarter, widening $0.9 billion from the previous quarter. In the financial account (unadjusted for seasonal variation), inflows of funds from abroad to finance the current account deficit mainly came from transactions in the form of loans as well as currency and deposits.
Payroll employment, earnings and hours, and job vacancies, March 2024
The number of employees receiving pay and benefits from their employer—measured as “payroll employment” in the Survey of Employment, Payrolls and Hours—increased by 51,400 (+0.3%) in March following an increase of 14,600 (+0.1%) in February. On a year-over-year basis, payroll employment was up by 232,100 (+1.3%) in March.
Poultry and egg statistics, May 2024 and annual 2023
In 2023, poultry production and sales saw a rise, attributable to increased demand and higher product prices, marking a recovery from the 2022 avian influenza outbreak. Total poultry sales increased 7.7% year over year, reaching $4.5 billion in 2023, while poultry farmers collectively produced 1.6 billion kilograms of chicken, turkey and stewing hens (+3.6%).
Deliveries of major grains, April 2024
Data on major grain deliveries are now available for April.
Milled wheat and wheat flour produced, April 2024
Millers milled 275 970 tonnes of wheat in April, while wheat flour production totalled 207 861 tonnes.
Oilseed crushing statistics, April 2024
Oilseed processors crushed 957 639 tonnes of canola in April. Oil production totalled 412 867 tonnes, while meal production totalled 555 628 tonnes.
Food services and drinking places, March 2024
Food services and drinking places data for Canada and the provinces and territories are now available for March. The Monthly Survey of Food Services and Drinking Places provides monthly estimates of the value of sales of restaurants, caterers, and drinking places by province and territory and by industry.
