Payroll employment, earnings and hours, and job vacancies, July 2024
The number of employees receiving pay and benefits from their employer—measured as “payroll employment” in the Survey of Employment, Payrolls and Hours—increased by 32,800 (+0.2%) in July, following a decline in June (-22,900; -0.1%) and five consecutive monthly increases from January to May.

Monthly estimates of business openings and closures, June 2024
In June, the business opening rate dropped by 0.4 percentage points to 4.2%, its largest decline since August 2021, while the business closure rate rose 0.2 percentage points for the second consecutive month. The closure rate was 5.0%, its highest level since June 2020 when it reached 7.1%. In June 2024, the opening rate was 0.5 percentage points below its 2015-to-2019 monthly historical average while the closure rate was 0.4 percentage points above its monthly historical average.

Aircraft movement and civil aviation statistics, July 2024
In July, aircraft movements at Canada’s major and select small airports totalled 592,193, up 7.5% from July 2023. Itinerant movements increased 5.6% year over year to 419,341 in July 2024, while local movements rose 12.5% to 172,852.

Wholesale trade: Early indicator, August 2024
Statistics Canada is providing an advance estimate of sales in the wholesale trade sector for August. The advance results for August indicate that wholesale sales (excluding petroleum, petroleum products, and other hydrocarbons and excluding oilseed and grain) fell 1.1%. The decline reflects lower sales in five out of seven subsectors.
