Digital supply and use tables, 2017 to 2020

The contribution of the digital economy to gross domestic product trended up from 5.2% ($104 billion) in 2017 to 5.9% ($123 billion) during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The share of the sector in overall jobs followed a similar trend, increasing from 4.0% of total jobs in 2017 to 5.0% in 2020.

Monthly estimates of business openings and closures, April 2023

In April, the business opening rate rose by 0.6 percentage points to 4.9%, following three consecutive months of decreases. The business closure rate edged up 0.1 percentage points to settle at 4.8%. The number of active businesses remained relatively unchanged, as business closures and openings were somewhat similar.

Monthly civil aviation statistics, May 2023

Major Canadian airlines carried 6.4 million passengers on scheduled and charter services in May, up 22.0% from the same month in 2022. This is the highest monthly recovery of passenger numbers since the COVID-19 pandemic started, at 5.6% below the May 2019 level.

In May, aircraft movements at Canada’s major and select small airports totalled 552,493, up 8.0% from May 2022, albeit 7.5% lower than in May 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Monthly Survey of Manufacturing: Flash estimate, June 2023

Given the rapidly evolving economic situation, Statistics Canada is providing an advance estimate of sales in the manufacturing sector for June. Advance results indicate that total manufacturing sales decreased 2.1% in June. The largest declines were in the petroleum and coal product, chemical, and food product industries.
