Press Release

Sep 07, 2022

The Dawson Regional Planning Commission’s Recommended Plan is now available to the public. This is a significant milestone in the regional land use planning process and an important step under Chapter 11 of the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in Final Agreement.

Public engagement will begin on September 19, at which time the Government of Yukon and Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in invite all Yukoners to complete the online survey. The engagement period will run until November 20, 2022. Your feedback is vital to shaping the future land use in the Dawson planning region.

The upcoming public engagement will include in-person conversations with the communities of Dawson, Old Crow, Mayo and Whitehorse and the opportunity to provide feedback online.

Together with Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in, we have reached this significant milestone in the Dawson Regional Land Use Planning Process and we are excited to continue working collaboratively with our partners to advance this important work. I encourage all Yukoners to submit their feedback to help develop a path forward for the future use and conservation of this land.

Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources John Streicker

Thank you to the diligent and collaborative work of the Commission, the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in government and others, a recommended plan for land use and conservation of this area has been developed. This plan marks an important step under Chapter 11 of the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in Final Agreement and I look forward to hearing the thoughts of Yukoners on the Commission’s recommended Plan.

Minister of Environment, Nils Clarke

On behalf of Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in I would like to congratulate the Dawson Regional Planning Commission on the delivery of their Recommended Plan. It is very inspiring to have reached this important milestone. The creation of a land use plan for the Dawson region is a keystone of our Final Agreement. It is fundamental to the recognition and protection of our cultural distinction within our Traditional Territory. I encourage Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in citizens and all Yukoners to review the Recommended Plan and to provide feedback and I look forward to continued respectful and meaningful dialogue with our partner, the Yukon Government, in the months to come.

Chief Joseph, Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in
