As the continent-wide trade war triggered by U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to impose sweeping new 25 per cent tariffs on most Canadian and Mexican imports heads into a second day, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is set for a potentially high-stakes call with his American counterpart later today, as initially reported by the Associated Press, citing a “senior government official,” and later confirmed by the Toronto Star, which noted that the two leaders “are scheduled to speak Wednesday morning.”

As Global News reported last night, in an interview that aired on Fox News yesterday afternoon, U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick predicted that the president “will ‘work something out’” with Canada and Mexico that could result in the newly applied levies being reduced, although likely not eliminated completely.
