‘Uphold committments’ to Indigenous people, Ontario First Nations Chief tells Mark Carney – INsauga

Seven pieces of legislation of “critical importance” to Canada’s Indigenous people that were lost when Parliament was halted on January 6 should immediately go back on the floor of the House of Commons when MPs return on March 24, said the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

Chief Kelly LaRocca congratulated Prime Minister-designate Mark Carney on his win in the Liberal leadership race but pointed out issues affecting Indigenous people and reconciliation were mentioned just twice – in 90-second sound bites – during the leadership debates.

“All candidates made commitments to improve relations and to help our people and we hope you will stick by your word,” LaRocca said in an open letter to Carney, reminding him that Indigenous people are “an integral part” of the country.
