Urban reserves ‘key to Indigenous prosperity’: Kapyong project exec – Winnipeg Sun

The Kapyong Barracks site, Canada’s largest urban Indigenous reserve located in west Winnipeg, is positioned to become a national leader in Indigenous-led commerce. One project executive is taking time to educate the public and dispel some of the myths around urban reserve development.
The mixed-use, 160-acre Kapyong development is a partnership between Treaty 1 Development Corporation (T1DC) and Canada Lands, a self-financed federal Crown corporation. Showcasing Indigenous design and culture, the consortium released its redevelopment plan last year, which includes a mixed-use village, commercial mixed-use, low-density housing, recreation facilities, education sites and community green space.
Tim Daniels, chief operating officer of T1DC, spoke to the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce and stakeholders during a live stream event on Thursday regarding what the development means for Winnipeg, Indigenous people, and the business community’s journey to reconciliation. He said urban reserves — there are 120 in Canada — are key to Indigenous prosperity.
