This Friday many of us will pull out all the red we can find in the closet, suit up in the maple leaf and celebrate this fine country’s birthday.
Canada turns 149 this year, one away from the big one-five-oh. Being a Friday only means this year’s party should be an even bigger one than usual. That includes West Niagara, where the Grimsby Museum and Charles Daley park are the places to be.
I consider myself a fairly patriotic individual. During a recent tour of the Mackenzie Printery and Newspaper Museum – where this young journalist geeked out pretty substantially – I was left aghast when the tour guide explained Mackenzie’s role in the Rebellions of 1837 and said few people had ever heard of the Rebellions. Few had ever heard? This was a key part of pre-Confederation history. I’m pretty sure they even made Canadian Heritage Minutes video of it. How could it be so unknown?
