Job purpose

Aboriginal Legal Services (ALS) strengthens the capacity of the Aboriginal community and its citizens to deal with justice issues and provide Aboriginal controlled and culturally based justice alternatives. The Adult Pre-Charge Diversion Worker will be part of the Community Council Team. The role of the Worker will be to liaise with divisions of the Toronto Police Service (TPS) who are part of a pilot Indigenous Pre-Charge Diversion Program. This is a unionized position.

Duties and responsibilities

• Liaison with the Toronto Police Service (TPS) in the development of a Pre-Charge Diversion Program (PCD) for adults;
• Develop relationships and cooperates with the TPS and other staff participating in the project and the ALS Community Council;
• Develop relationships and cooperates with the TPS and other staff participating in the project and the ALS Community Council;
• Obtain the paperwork for diversions, liaises with clients and assists them to attend their Community Council hearings;
• Keep a continuous dialogue and interaction with the TPS and other PCD staff as the program develops;
• Other duties as assigned;

Qualifications

• The successful applicant will be comfortable working with police and members of the Indigenous community;
• Proficient in working with computers and databases;
• Ability to work with a wide range of individuals;
• Ability to work independently;
• Knowledge of the criminal justice system and programs and services available to Indigenous people in Toronto and Scarborough area would be a great asset;
• Valid driving license is preferred;
