Amid fresh tariff threat, Carney convenes meeting of Canada – U.S. cabinet committee as Singh meets with local labour leaders in Windsor, Ont. – iPolitics

In the wake of yesterday’s move by U.S. President Donald Trump to carry out his threat to impose what CBC News notes “may be his most devastating tariffs yet, hitting a sizable chunk of the cross-border auto trade and potentially all of it at a later date,” Liberal leader Mark Carney will be taking a brief break from the campaign trail as he heads back to Ottawa for a closed-door huddle with the cabinet committee on Canada – U.S. relations.

Speaking with reporters before hitting the stage at an evening rally in Kitchener, Ont. last night, Carney noted that his government “has imposed some retaliatory tariffs already, made a commitment to ‘use every dollar,’ collected from those retaliatory tariffs to support workers, and moved last week to introduce aid to help companies including allowing them to defer income tax and GST or HST remittances from April 2 to the end of June to provide up to $40 billion in liquidity,” Canadian Press reports.
