Pink salmon runs have been decimated on the West Coast, so the appearance of a few thousand at Bond Sound on B.C.’s Central Coast this summer has been a bright spot for local First Nations.
Aboriginal elders on British Columbia’s central coast are watching pink salmon return to rivers that flow out towards the Broughton Archipelago on the Inside Passage in numbers they haven’t seen in decades, says Bob Chamberlin of the First Nations Wild Salmon Alliance.
The alliance was among conservation groups that campaigned to have salmon farms removed from migration routes that run through that group of islands and Chamberlin attributes the fish returning to the first removals.
