Art lovers, mark your 2015 calendars!
Northwestel, with the help of art panels from across the North, has selected the winners of the 2015/16 Northwestel Directory Cover Art Competition. After expert debate and discussion, a winner was selected from a record 114 submissions.
This year’s panel members included Yukon Art Centre gallery curator Mary Bradshaw, Nunavut Arts and Crafts Executive Director Rowena House, NWT visual artist Jennifer Walden and several veteran competition organizers from Northwestel.
“This is the second year that I’ve been a part of the panel and once again, I’m impressed with the caliber of submissions,” said Bradshaw. “Of course, there were a number of pieces that stood out. Choosing between those truly spectacular ones is nothing short of a challenge because you want to make sure you get it right.”
The 2015/16 competition drew submissions from artists located across northern Canada, which covered a wide range of subject matter across all mediums. This year, the prize for the winning piece also increased to $3,000.
Northwestel has held an annual competition to select the cover art since 1985. Artists from the Yukon, northern British Columbia, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut are invited to submit their art for a chance to have their work featured on the directories that are distributed across northern Canada.
“We’re proud to once again be celebrating this popular program with art communities across the North,” said Northwestel Community Investment Manager Paolo Gallina. “The quality and the number of submissions we received this year speaks volumes to the importance of this annual tradition for the arts community.”
The winning artists will be announced at Northwestel unveiling events in early 2015.
