Ottawa (March 30, 2015) – Today, the Canadian Gas Association (CGA) recognized ATCO Gas, Enbridge Gas Distribution, and an employee from Union Gas for their important contributions to improving public and worker safety.
The CGA Public Safety Award is presented to individuals or groups who make significant contributions to public safety within the natural gas delivery industry in Canada. This award recognizes excellence and leadership in promoting public awareness and education about the safe use of natural gas and the safety measures required when working with natural gas infrastructure.
The CGA Worker Safety Leadership Award is presented to an individual or individuals who have made an exceptional difference to health and safety. The award recognizes workers who go beyond normal expectations for their position to demonstrate leadership in safety and create a better work environment for a healthier and safer workplace.
“I am extremely pleased to present ATCO Gas, Enbridge Gas Distribution with the CGA Public Safety Award, and Wendy Lee an employee of Union Gas with CGA’s Worker Safety Leadership award on behalf of Canada’s natural gas distribution industry,” said James Tweedie, Director, Operations, Safety and Integrity Management for CGA. “Through their commitment to communicate, educate, and be in the field with homeowners, customers, and stakeholders they have promoted safe digging practices, raised awareness of specific safety measures, and encouraged others to participate in important safety programs.”

Through her work, Ms. Lee has demonstrated outstanding contributions to worker health and safety, resulting in the prevention of workplace injuries and incidents. She has developed and implemented solutions to identify workplace health and safety issues and has developed awareness-raising activities which have helped reduce the risk of work-related injuries. An evaluation committee representing gas distribution companies across Canada reviewed the applications based on a set of pre-determined criteria including applicability across the industry, effectiveness of strengthening employee or public safety, and the measureable results. The Public Safety Award was presented at the Annual Safety Awards ceremony in Edmonton, Alberta.
