Bernard Valcourt weighs in on Onion Lake – Meridian Booster

The finances of Onion Lake Cree Nation along with several other First Nations across Canada continue to remain a mystery, with a coalition of First Nations groups in Alberta and Saskatchewan forming a small but vocal opposition to Bill C-27, otherwise known as the First Nations Financial Transparency Act.

“I cannot comment specially on a case before the courts, but I can tell you that this law applies to all First Nations in Canada, except those that are excepted,” said Bernard Valcourt, federal minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development.

“First Nations, like all Canadians deserve transparency and accountability from their leadership. As I’ve said before, I’m pleased that up until now 90 per cent of First Nations have complied with the law, providing their membership with more transparent and accountable governance, and in turn helping to ensure band revenues are being used to for their benefit.”

The stated goal of the bill is to ensure that the same accountability and transparency laws that already exist for other governments across the country also apply to First Nations governance. The majority have already filed their financial statements, which are published on the Aboriginal Affairs government webpage.
