Sheila Howard
CAPA
Sheila Howard, CAPA has been part of the AFOA community for more than two decades. She began with AFOA Alberta in 2004 and later worked with AFOA Canada from 2009 to 2022, carrying responsibility for the national conference, capacity development workshops, financial wellness programs, and the budgets and delivery behind them.
Those years shaped how she understands governance not as theory, but as responsibility for people, resources, and long-term community wellbeing. Much of how Sheila leads today was shaped through her years with AFOA. It did not simply shape her career. It shaped how she leads.
After more than a decade with AFOA Canada, Sheila continued her work in national Métis organizations, including the Métis National Council, and is now with Les Femmes Michif Otipemisiwak (Women of the Métis Nation). Across each role, her focus has remained consistent: accountability to community, respect for Indigenous governance systems, and leadership rooted in responsibility.
Today, Sheila is also a Board Director with AFOA Alberta and Vice President on the council for the Métis Nation of Alberta Local 87 of Calgary. She also leads her purpose-led part-time practice, Fireweed Strategies and Solutions, supporting organizations through governance, planning, and community-centred leadership.
A Certified Aboriginal Professional Administrator (CAPA) and member of the Institute of Corporate Directors (ICD), Sheila brings deep operational knowledge of how governance decisions become real budgets, real programs, and real community outcomes. Her approach to board service is grounded in integrity, transparency, and long-term stewardship.
Sheila is a proud citizen of the Métis Nation of Alberta and a mother of three and grandmother of four. Her two sons are members of Siksika Nation, her daughter is a Métis citizen, and her grandchildren are growing up connected to Siksika, Chiniki, and their Métis roots. This lived connection across Nations and generations shapes how she understands representation, responsibility, and what it truly means to serve community.
