The Canada Council has announced it is beginning “an ambitious project to reconfigure and modernize” its grant programs, which help fund Canadian artists and arts organizations.
In a speech posted on the Canada Council website, CEO and director Simon Brault states that the Canada Council must change to remain relevant in the 21st century.
Brault says the Canada Council must recognize that Canadians’ ways of consuming art has changed thanks to technology, and the funding agency must alter its ways of funding the arts accordingly.
Brault declares that the Canada Council will reduce its 142 grant programs to “less than 10 major, national, non-disciplinary programs that cover all fields of artistic practice and its outreach in Canada and the world.”
