Canada’s newest and national Indigenous coffee roasting company launches in Victoria, BC

Victoria West, BC:  Successful café entrepreneur Muskwasis known as David Cardinal has spent the past year perfecting single origin coffee roasting to bring to turtle island coffee.

“Turtle island is the name of our land as part of the creation story for many nations walking this land and so it was fitting to also use the medicine wheel for our logo as it represents the spiritual, physical, mental and emotional teachings that guide us through our lives,” Cardinal explained.

All the coffees are roasted and packaged on the unceded territories of the Lekwungen and  W̱SÁNEĆ peoples. turtle island coffee presents four single origin coffees, each roasted to distinct levels and each featuring Indigenous art from different nations across turtle island, representing a teaching of the medicine wheel.

turtle island coffee is Indigenous owned and operated and is the first coffee roastery to present Indigenous art and teaching from across turtle island.  The artists featured on the roasts from across Canada are Victor Newman (Kwagiulth), Danielle Robinson (Anishnaabe), Bada Jean (Cree) and Des Bowker (Haida).

The turtle island single origin coffees offered are all grown on turtle island, roasted to 4 different levels:  light-medium, medium, medium dark, and dark roast. Cardinal prides himself in knowing exactly the micro location of the region of the coffee beans.  “We select our single origins that work best at these different roast levels, to help provide a coffee for all coffee lovers,” said Cardinal.

Head roaster, Muskwasis (David Cardinal), is of Cree origin (Bigstone Cree nation) and has over 10 years’ experience roasting coffee and wishes to share the love of coffee with peoples across turtle island. He brought the successful Solstice Café to Victoria, operating for 15 years on lower Pandora then moved to the position of head roaster at both Level Ground and Esquimalt Roasting companies. Cardinal has visited coffee farms in Peru including one that is indigenous owned.
