Seven months after the equivalent of 2,000 Olympic swimming pools from a collapsed tailings dam were dumped into lively waterways in Canada’s British Columbia, the country’s mining association (MAC) is getting serious on safety.
The industry body said Tuesday it has commissioned an independent, multi-stakeholder expert task force to review its tailings management requirements to ensure failures, such as the one registered at Imperial Metals’ (TSX:III) Mount Polley open pit copper and gold mine, can be prevented.
