Carney’s bid to fast track ‘national interest’ projects inches closer to the legislative finish line – iPolitics

With his latest lap on the high-level diplomatic circuit behind him, Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to spend his first day back in Ottawa ensconced in “private meetings,” according to his office.

It’s a safe bet, however, that he’ll also be keeping tabs on the progress of his government’s plan to create “one Canadian economy” with a new process to accelerate the approval of projects deemed to be in the “national interest” and eliminating federal barriers to internal trade, as laid out in the omnibus bill currently working its way through the Senate.

Courtesy of a rare show of cross-aisle cooperation between the governing minority Liberals and their Conservatives adversaries — and, it’s worth noting, over the objections of the Bloc Québécois, the New Democrats and lone Green MP Elizabeth May — the bill cleared the House of Commons last week, and made its official debut on the floor of the Red Chamber yesterday afternoon.
