Community Justice Worker

Southern Chiefs’ Organization requires a Community Justice Worker for a full-time position in Bloodvein First Nation. The position will be located in Bloodvein and will require travel to neighbouring First Nation communities. This position reports to Southern Chiefs’ Organization’s Community Justice Development Coordinator.

BACKGROUND:

SCO is a growing and dynamic regional Indigenous organization that represents 34 Anishinaabe and Dakota Nations and more than 81,000 citizens in southern Manitoba. SCO was established 23 years ago by the Chiefs as an independent organization to protect, preserve, promote, and enhance First Nation peoples’ inherent rights, languages, customs, and traditions through the application and implementation of the spirit and intent of the Treaty-making process.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work with Bloodvein First Nation on advocating for diversion files under the Restorative Justice Program.
  • Attend court on a weekly basis to provide progress updates on client files.
  • Work with Crown in screening potential cases.
  • Update Crown and RCMP with status/completion of cases including diversions.
  • Be responsible for facilitating communication between the Department of Justice, RCMP, Crown, and other community organizations and service providers in the areas of Diversion, victim services, crime prevention and mediation.
  • Recruit and retain reliable and responsible Community Justice Committee members in the First Nation.
  • Work exclusively with the Community Justice Committee in presenting referrals and facilitating regular meetings between the Community Justice Committee and clients.
  • Provide case management for all files that are referred to the program.
  • Facilitate regular group capacity building sessions for clients of the program.
  • Provide individual counselling to clients from an Indigenous worldview perspective utilizing holistic frameworks and interventions.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with all key stakeholders and partners.
  • Ensure confidentiality and conflicts of interest are addressed respecting Community Justice Committee members.
  • Provide monthly, quarterly and annual reports to Community Justice Development Coordinator and provide updates to Chief and Council and First Nation members on restorative justice matters.
  • Attend weekly department staff meetings via teleconference.
  • Attend monthly staff meetings via teleconference.
  • Attending all training relevant to the position as required.
  • Other duties as assigned as per Bloodvein First Nation and Southern Chiefs’ Organization.

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Post-Secondary diploma/degree in Native Studies, Criminology, Conflict Resolution Studies or relevant combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in developing, delivering, and coordinating community-based programs.
  • Experience working with First Nations.
  • Extensive experience in networking with various community service providers and partners.
  • Extensive experience in case management, counselling & group facilitation.
  • Experience in intake and assessment protocols.
  • Knowledge of Restorative Justice, mediation services, and related practices.
  • Possess analytical, decision-making, and planning skills.
  • Ability to think critically.
  • Must possess strong computer, written and oral communication skills.
  • Must possess strong initiative and follow-up.
  • Ability to work independently as well as on a team.
  • Must possess knowledge of MS Office, Outlook, and office equipment.
  • Knowledge of First Nation culture, values, and traditions.
  • Ability to speak Anishinaabemowin an asset.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Satisfactory Criminal Record check and Child Abuse Registry Check.
  • All successful candidates must provide proof of double COVID-19 vaccination.
  • Must possess a valid Class V Manitoba Driver’s License with access to a reliable vehicle.
