Number of southern-based mine workers doubled in last five years
Rising costs of living mean an increasing number of mining jobs in the NWT are occupied by southern residents who would rather make the commute than move North, according to a report released last week by the NWT Bureau of Statistics.
The report, which highlights the results of a survey conducted in 2014 with mine employees in the territory, shows the number of non-NWT residents working for mines in the NWT almost doubled over the past five years.
Apart from liking where they live, the results indicate cost of living is a key deterrent to southern-based employees making the move north.
