Devolution is an opportunity’: K’atl’odeeche signs deal with GNWT – Northern Journal

After years spent warily dissecting the possible impacts of the NWT devolution agreement, Chief Roy Fabian of the K’atl’odeeche First Nation (KFN) signed on to the deal with the territorial government on Monday.

Fabian, who once denounced the federal transfer of authorities over land, water and resources to the territory as the GNWT’s illegitimate land claim, said the First Nation is eager to establish an array of co-management agreements with the territorial government that will benefit both parties.

“We changed our mind about the whole devolution, because we see that there’s an opportunity for us to be able to implement the treaty the way that we see it, based on our treaty rights,” the chief told The Journal last week. “That’s why we’re going to sign on.”
