Dr. Carl Amrhein to join The Conference Board of Canada as its Distinguished Research Chair

Press Release

Ottawa, December 4, 2014 – The Conference Board of Canada is pleased to announce the 5 year secondment of Dr. Carl Amrhein as its Distinguished Research Chair, effective July 1, 2015.

”We are delighted to welcome Dr. Amrhein to our team as we advance important strategies in higher education and immigration to respond to a rapidly changing domestic and global context,” said Daniel Muzyka, President and CEO of The Conference Board of Canada. “He brings tremendous knowledge and hands-on experience with post-secondary education in Canada and abroad.  Dr. Amrhein served more than a decade as Provost at the University of Alberta, one of Canada’s top research-intensive universities.  He is also a highly regarded expert on other leading post-secondary education systems including China, Germany, and Australia.”

Dr. Amrhein has played an instrumental role in the launch of our Centre for Skills and Post-Secondary Education which has a mandate to develop a national strategy that addresses challenges in areas such as responsiveness of PSE to labour market skills needs and connections between research and the economy.

“Having been involved in the launch of the Centre for Skills and Post-Secondary Education, I am both honoured and excited to help drive this important work forward,” said Dr. Carl Amrhein. “I believe that Canada’s post-secondary systems need a fresh outlook, enhanced partnerships, and strategic investments to keep us at the forefront of innovations taking place across the education and learning environment globally.

Dr. Amrhein will continue his work with the Centre for Skills and Post-Secondary Education and apply his skills and expertise to a newly-created National Immigration Centre. His involvement in both initiatives recognizes the increasing interdependence of Canada’s education and immigration policies in areas such as international education and research as well as credential recognition and prior learning assessment for immigrants. In addition, we will be calling on him to contribute to the Conference Board’s growing business in professional development, taking advantage of his expertise on partnership building across business, education, and key stakeholders, such as Canada’s Aboriginal Peoples.

Dr. Amrhein holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Geography from Pennsylvania State University and a Ph.D. in Geography from State University of New York at Buffalo.  He also attended the Institute for Education Management at Harvard University Graduate School of Education. His research interests span economic geography, labour markets, decision theory, migration, and quantitative methods.  He recently co-edited the book, Building Success in a Global University: Government and Academia – Redefining the Relationship Around the World.
