A sea ice research team from the Netherlands is in Qikiqtarjuaq to test a method of making ice thicker and last longer.
Arctic Reflections will be in the community from Feb. 2 to March 8, pumping water from underneath sea ice to the surface in hopes of accelerating the freezing process.
“The aim is to validate if thickened ice lasts longer and is more reflective than the surrounding sea ice. We did previous field tests in Svalbard (Norway) and in (Pistolet Bay) Newfoundland,” Fonger Ypma, founder and CEO of Arctic Reflections said.
