It is the mission of Tungasuvvingat Inuit (TI) to provide Inuit-specific programs that contribute to the health and wellbeing of Inuit, and to encourage and support similar programs for Inuit across the country. With over 30 years of highly successful experience in crafting the design, development, and delivery of a wide range of effective, client-centered services, TI continues to deliver quality programs and services that directly benefit our growing urban Inuit population.
TI is searching for a skilled and experienced candidate to coordinate the successful implementation of TI’s Ataata Parenting Program Project, which aims to develop an Inuit-specific curriculum-based parenting program for Inuit fathers to engage them in their children’s early learning and development. The incumbent will be accountable for all program workplan activities and will ensure project deliverables are achieved.
Additionally, the incumbent will plan, organize, and deliver various virtual and in-person training initiatives and workshops for Inuit parents and youth in Ontario who are involved with or at risk of involvement with child protection services, foster caregivers and kin caregivers who are caring for Inuit children, and children’s aid societies and other service providers that deliver services to Inuit children, youth, and families in Ontario.
Key responsibilities of the position include:
- Manage all activities of the Ataata Parenting Project (meetings, consultations, management of consultants, curriculum development, delivery of program pilots, etc.);
- Arrange and facilitate regular meetings of the Ataata Project Steering Committee;
- Develop, plan, and coordinate the delivery of the following training and education programs in-person and virtually:
O Education workshops for Inuit families relocating from Inuit Nunangat to Ontario to increase their understanding of and ability to navigate service systems in the South.
O Inuit cultural competency training for children’s aid societies, residential service providers, foster caregivers and kin caregivers, and other service providers to improve their ability to provide culturally appropriate services and supports for Inuit children and youth.
O Education and training workshops for Inuit parents and youth involved with or at risk of involvement with children’s aid societies to increase their knowledge of their rights and child protection process in Ontario.
- Liaise with and oversee the work of Project Consultants, training facilitators and other third party providers;
- Meet all tracking, evaluation, and reporting requirements of funders and TI and prepare and submit various reports as required (budget monitoring, project status updates, Annual Operational Plan, Forecast of Projected Expenditure, Annual Reports, Board Reports, etc.);
- Establish and maintain positive working relationships and engage with various agencies and stakeholders to strengthen, develop, and promote the Ataata Parenting Program Project and other training initiatives; and
- Support the role of Elders and cultural knowledge holders in sharing traditional knowledge within the Ataata Parenting Program Project and other training initiatives.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have in-depth knowledge of education and training techniques, curriculum development and program evaluation, and project management techniques and methodologies. The candidate will also have a thorough understanding of Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit and Inuit culture, societal values, customs, and traditions, the history of Inuit in Canada and the impact of urbanization and colonization as well as the socio-economic determinates of health that impact urban Inuit in Ontario.
Excellent communication, consultation, public speaking, and group facilitation skills, intermediate financial management and budgeting skills, computer literacy skills in MS Office and video-conferencing platforms (e.g. Zoom), and problem-solving, time management and organizational skills are necessary.
The ability to work from a strength-based, trauma-informed, and community-centered approach is a requirement of the position.
A post-secondary degree or diploma in Indigenous Studies, Education, Early Childhood Education, Social Work, or Social Services is preferred. Must have three years’ relevant work experience, preferably working with the Inuit or another Indigenous community, which includes providing workshops, group facilitation, and developing and delivering training and education. Fluency in English is required and the ability to communicate in Inuktitut is an asset. Previous experience working for a community or nonprofit organization is also an asset.
A combination of related education and experience may be accepted.
