It was 25 years in the making, but the Anishnabek Nation Governance Agreement took effect on Saturday.
It is the first self-government agreement of its kind in Ontario. This agreement was forged with the Canadian Government.
It removes some of the shackles of the Indian Act, as parts of this legislation no longer apply, allowing the five signatories of the Anishnabek Nations to better govern themselves and their people.
“I never thought I would see this in my lifetime what I saw happen today,” said Chief of Staff for the Chiefs of Ontario Charlotte Commanda.
“It was a pleasure to see. It means we can make a start to make our own decisions, making our own laws and we can move forward with our teachings, our knowledge and share that with the next generation. We had (in the past) to follow the rules of the (Canadian) government.”
