For the second year in a row, the territorial government is budgeting an additional $50 million for infrastructure projects as part of its capital estimates for 2015-16.
NWT Finance Minister Michael Miltenberger released the budget on the first day of fall session, remaining true to the fiscal objectives of the 17th Assembly, which held to a doctrine of fiscal discipline for the first two years in order to ramp up capital spending by $50 million a year in the final two years.
This year’s capital plan budgets a total of $314 million towards infrastructure, with most of that money going to roads. A total of $108 million is allocated towards highways and winter roads, including funding for the Inuvik-Tuktoyaktuk Highway.
An additional $84 million is set aside for health facility replacements, renovations and system upgrades, including the ongoing Stanton Territorial Hospital renos.
