Government of Yukon receives minimum wage review

The Employment Standards Board has submitted its review of Yukon’s minimum wage to the Minister of Community Services.
The report includes recommendations for changes to Yukon’s minimum wage based on numerous factors including:
- feedback from Yukoners through the Minimum Wage Survey;
- meetings and feedback from numerous interested agencies;
- statistical and economic information provided by the Yukon Bureau of Statistics; and
- academic information and studies on minimum wage.
Cabinet will now review the report and recommendations and will decide on what changes will be made to Yukon’s minimum wage.
I would like to thank the Employment Standards Board for their care and diligence in conducting a thorough review of the minimum wage in the Yukon. This review is timely in light of recent changes to minimum wages across Canada and increases in the cost of living that affect all Yukoners. We look forward to reviewing the report and choosing a course of action that will ensure the Yukon remains competitive while balancing the needs of both employers and employees.

- On March 20, 2018, the Government of Yukon requested that the Employment Standards Board conduct a review of Yukon’s minimum wage and make recommendations as required.
- Yukon’s current minimum wage of $11.51 per hour ranks eighth out of the 13 Canadian jurisdictions at this time.
- Stakeholders provided their feedback to the Employee Standards Board through an online survey and written submissions. In all, there were 661 responses received from June 8 to July 15, 2018.
- As it presently stands, Yukon’s minimum wage increases according to the annual increase in the Whitehorse Consumer Price Index (CPI) on April 1 of each year. The CPI is a baseline set on a basket of daily purchases such as fuel, food and clothing.
