Chinese-owned company looks to drill 20 oil and gas wells near Eagle Plains
Gwich’in First Nations in the NWT and Yukon are looking for more time to review a proposal from Northern Cross that seeks to drill 20 exploratory oil and gas wells in the Eagle Plains area west of the Yukon border.
The Tetlit Gwich’in Council of Fort McPherson, the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation of Old Crow, the Na-Cho Nyak Dun First Nation of Mayo and the Porcupine Caribou Management Board have all requested the consultation period be extended for the project that is anticipated to begin in January if approved by the Yukon review board.
Concerned Gwich’in in the NWT say they have not been properly consulted on the project and its potential impacts on the environment and their harvesting rights.
