Harper Government Launches Initiative to Promote Economic Development Opportunities in Northern Ontario’s First Nation and Rural Communities

The Honourable Greg Rickford, Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources and Minister for the Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario (FedNor), announced today a new FedNor initiative designed to help Northern Ontario communities and First Nations attract, retain and support business investment, leading to economic growth, job creation and long-term prosperity.

The goal of the Community Investment Initiative for Northern Ontario (CIINO) is to help eligible municipalities and First Nations hire staff on a term basis to facilitate the identification of opportunities and the management of local economic development efforts and collaboration with regional partners to strengthen the economy.

• The Community Investment Initiative for Northern Ontario will be provided through FedNor’s Northern Ontario Development Program, which supports projects that strengthen community economic development, enhance business development and growth, and facilitate innovation throughout the region.
• Municipalities, First Nation communities, Community Futures Development Corporations and First Nation Councils may be eligible to apply for funding if they do not have an existing, full-time economic development position, provided they also meet the initiative’s criteria.
• Since 2006, through FedNor’s Northern Ontario Development Program, the Harper Government has invested $329 million in support of more than 1,600 projects. These investments have supported more than 21,500 jobs throughout Northern Ontario.
