Hatch upgrades furnace control system for Sudbury Integrated Nickel

Press Releases

Hatch has been retained by Sudbury Integrated Nickel, a subsidiary of Glencore, to replace parts of the existing control hardware and the entire control software for the furnace No.2 electrode regulation system at the FeNi smelter in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada.

The control system upgrade is being done in parallel with a furnace rebuild. The new Allen-Bradley control system will replace the existing TI control system which has become obsolete. The new system will connect to the same Foxboro distributed control system (DCS). The new system will improve furnace operation uptime and is more reliable.

Hatch was sole-sourced for the project because of our expertise in furnace controls and because Hatch had implemented the original system 20 years ago.

The project began in January and is scheduled to be completed in September 2015, dependent on the furnace construction schedule.
