Liberals and New Democrats have touted their governing agreement as a stable option for Canada — something that is particularly important in achieving progress on issues facing Indigenous communities.
OTTAWA—If there was one word Liberals and New Democrats used most this week to tout the pact struck by their leaders, it had to be “stability.”
And for no one might that new-found stability be more important than Indigenous peoples, says Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Marc Miller.
“When we get into the situation of minority government, when things could change overnight based on a vote in the House of Commons — which is perhaps far removed from the everyday reality of Indigenous leadership and Indigenous peoples — it does fuel uncertainty and sort of magnifies the distrust that is already relatively high vis-a-vis the federal government, regardless of its political stripe,” Miller told the Star.
