The Indian group opposing Imperial Metals Corp.’s Red Chris mine, known as the Klabona Keepers, says that nobody properly consulted its members about the project, a “grave and serious” violation of aboriginal rights. The group claims its members have been the protectors of the area around the mine for thousands of years. It contends that the company is destroying the area without consent.

The statements come in response to a lawsuit that Imperial Metals filed in the Supreme Court of British Columbia on Oct. 3, 2014, over a roadblock at its Red Chris mine. The company complained that the Klabona Keepers blocked the two access roads to the mine and refused to allow vehicles to pass. Imperial Metals sought and won an interim injunction removing the roadblock, but that injunction only lasts until a full hearing on the matter.
