Kitikmeot infrastructure investment featured in New York Times – WKRC

Norimitsu Onishi reports from Gjoa Haven for the The New York Times about how “Canada is rushing to avoid becoming a bystander, despite having more Arctic land than any other nation except Russia. Prime Minister Mark Carney recently announced Canada’s biggest jump in military spending since World War II and has promised enormous infrastructure projects to strengthen Canada’s hold on the region.”

The story features interviews with Gjoa Haven Mayor Raymond Quqshuun, Allen Aglukkaq, Peter Akkikungnaq, Josephine Kamookak, the Arctic Research Foundation’s Adrian Schimnowski, Ben Putuguq, Sammy Kogvik, and MLA Tony Akoak.

Tony Akoak says that bigger airports, deeper ports and more docks would help the Kitikmeot region grow economically, increase Canada’s military capacity and help fend off foreign designs on the Northwest Passage.
