Press Release
NEW AIYANSH, B.C. – Ksi Lisims LNG and the Prince Rupert Gas Transmission (PRGT) Project have been listed by the Government of Canada as Projects of National Interest. As a co-developer of these Nation building projects, the Nisga’a Nation applauds the Government’s recognition of the role these transformative Indigenous-led projects will play in in a stronger and more resilient Canada.
The recognition means that Ksi Lisims LNG, PRGT, and the Nass Valley Regional Transmission Line have been referred to the Major Projects Office. They will help advance our projects by coordinating government efforts aimed at creating investment certainty and enabling Indigenous participation as we work towards a Final Investment Decision in the coming months.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Nisga’a Final Agreement, the first Modern Treaty in British Columbia, and sets the foundation for the development of a prosperous, self-sufficient Nisga’a Nation.
“The Nisga’a Nation has always been willing to take the first steps toward a better future. From the Frank Calder case to the signing of our modern treaty, we’ve never waited for change—we’ve made it happen on our terms. Our leadership of the Ksi Lisims LNG and PRGT projects is the next step on our journey. We’re showing B.C., Canada, and the world what Indigenous economic independence and shared prosperity can look like said Eva Clayton, President, Nisga’a Lisims Government.
“Like many Nations in northern B.C., most of our citizens have had to leave our traditional lands to find opportunities elsewhere. We cannot keep our culture and traditions strong unless we build a stable economy which allows our people to live fulfilling lives right here at home. Ksi Lisims LNG and the associated pipeline and transmission infrastructure will help create meaningful opportunities – not just for Nisga’a citizens, but for all Nations and communities in B.C.’s northwest and along the pipeline corridor.”
