The Chiefs of Ontario is inviting applications for the position of Law Student Researcher (Summer term – 12 weeks). The researcher will be under the direction of the Justice Director and supported by a Project Lead. The research will focus on Indigenous legal traditions and justice system transformation. Our ideal candidate will have strong research and writing skills, enjoy working as a team and has the ability to work independently.
LOCATION: Remote
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: In order to meet Government funding requirements for this position, candidates must be:
- First Nation or Inuit
- Secondary and post-secondary student aged 15-30
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead major legal research projects and draft reports on the topics of corrections, policing legislation, First Nations laws, and UNDRIP.
- Provide ongoing support to the other members of the Justice Sector by tracking legislative developments and updating the team on evolutions in Indigenous law.
- Plan events and legal information sessions.
- Contribute to the long-term strategic policy of the team.
RELEVANT SKILLS:
- Must be enrolled in a post-secondary institution, preferably in the study of law.
- Must have a strong knowledge of both Indigenous law and Aboriginal law.
- Excellent research, writing, and presentation skills.
- Excellent organizational & information management skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft software.
- Self-directed, motivated and able to work independently.
- Adaptable and flexible to meet needs as they are determined.
DURATION: May 2022 – July 2022 (12 weeks)
