Leaders should have debated women’s issues – The Sudbury Star

When you put yourself out there as a left-leaning feminist, you are bound to have people question what you think when the NDP refuses to take part in a debate on women’s issues. Believe me, I got lots of questions.

Some were obviously taking more delight in announcing it then asking what I thought of it. I would just laugh and say maybe we should focus on why Stephen Harper isn’t taking part. Oh, right, because he wouldn’t have anything to say. This is a government that over the last nine years did away with many of the advances women had made in the last 20 or 30 years. When he came into power, he did away with any attempt for a universal child care plan (oh, I forgot, he sends parents money, except that money doesn’t go very far to pay for child care, does it?)

He threw out the government’s equality mandate, did away with pay equity (as much as Conservatives like to say we are paid the same, women are still only getting 74 cents on the dollar) and he refuses to hold an inquiry into the murdered and missing aboriginal women.
