DLA Piper (Canada) LLP is pleased to announce that Michael J. McDonald, a highly regarded Aboriginal lawyer in Canada, has joined the firm’s Vancouver office as associate counsel. Michael’s combination of expertise and experience will enhance the firm’s leading Aboriginal and First Nations group and the Environment group.
During a career that has spanned more than 25 years, Michael has negotiated and implemented some of Canada’s largest and most successful precedent-setting impact and benefits agreements on projects exceeding $20 billion in total. He has been repeatedly recognized by Lexpert as a leading lawyer in Aboriginal law.
A member of the Peguis First Nation, Michael brings a unique and valued perspective to his practice. He has acted for both First Nations and industry in successfully negotiating and structuring complex community-based Aboriginal business ventures in the forestry, mining, infrastructure, energy, oil and gas, finance, construction, and tourism sectors throughout Canada.
Michael has also advised on a broad range of real estate, environmental law and regulatory matters in a variety of complex projects. He has developed a solid reputation with various experts in the field, along with excellent communication avenues with government officials. He regularly advises indigenous clients on governance, economic development and wealth management matters.
Michael is called to the Bar in both British Columbia and the Northwest Territories. Michael has written and lectured extensively in Aboriginal business law, and has been an adjunct professor at both the University of British Columbia’s Allard School of Law and the Banff Centre for Aboriginal Leadership.
