London city hall briefs: Indigenous housing; green bins; restaurant patios – London Free Press

Plans to create a year-round housing hub to serve Indigenous people struggling with homelessness earned praise from politicians on the community and protective services committee on Tuesday. The committee meeting fell on Indigenous Peoples Day. Atlohsa Family Healing Services, the lead on Giwetashkad, the strategic plan for Indigenous homelessness, operated a winter shelter on the grounds of Parkwood Hospital to help people reconnect with their culture, community and get connected to social services and housing. Politicians said that effort set a great foundation for a longer-term housing effort, which would be modeled much the same. “The proof is in the numbers,” Ward 2 Coun. Shawn Lewis said, noting 13 people were housed, seven gained employment and four were reunited with family as a result of the temporary winter shelter.
