“I gave up on finding work at Makivik”
I am originally from Nunatsiavut and Nunavik. My family lives in both regions.
I am a beneficiary of the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement. I reside in Iqaluit. I hold three university degrees: BA, BCL, and LLB.
I am a member of the Law Societies of Upper Canada (Ontario) and Nunavut. I work as a criminal defence lawyer with the Legal Services Board of Nunavut. I write from Mittimatalik, where I am working on circuit court.
The Barreau du Québec says that more Inuit need to participate in the delivery of legal services in Nunavik.
Increasing Inuit membership in the Barreau would help improve access to justice for Nunavik Inuit. These observations are not new. In a May 7, 2013 news release, the Barreau considered the same issues.
