Makivvik Launches the Nunavik Climate Change Adaptation Strategy

Press Release

Quaqtaq, Quebec – April 17, 2024 – Makivvik proudly announces the launch of the Nunavik Climate Change Adaptation Strategy. This initiative follows an extensive collaboration process with Nunavik communities and organizations to ensure the Strategy truly responds to the region’s climate change adaptation needs and realities.

Climate change poses a significant threat to the delicate ecosystems and traditional ways of life in Nunavik. Recent scientific studies have revealed that northern Canada is warming at an alarming rate, with Nunavik experiencing three times the global average. Despite contributing minimally to global emissions, Nunavik communities face disproportionate impacts from climate change, including food insecurity, melting permafrost, increased extreme weather events, and shifting ice patterns.

Adamie Delisle Alaku, Vice President responsible for the Department of Wildlife, Environment, and Research at Makivvik, emphasized the importance of this Strategy, stating, “The launch of the Nunavik Climate Change Adaptation Strategy marks a pivotal moment in our collective commitment to safeguarding Nunavik Inuit culture and ways of life that are deeply rooted in the natural environment.”

The Strategy prioritizes self-determination, improving health and safety in Nunavik, protecting built infrastructure and enhancing the delivery of essential services. Through innovative actions tailored to the unique climate adaptation needs of Nunavik communities, the Strategy aims to create a safer, more sustainable future for generations to come.

Delisle Alaku expressed gratitude to Nunavik communities and organizations for their leadership and dedication in crafting the Strategy, recognizing the invaluable contribution of their voices, echoed in centuries of lived experience across the region. He emphasized the importance of strengthening Nunavik Inuit self-determination and called for unity in efforts to enable younger and older generations to thrive in their homeland.

The launch of the Nunavik Climate Change Adaptation Strategy signifies a bold step towards climate resilience and environmental justice in the region. Makivvik looks forward to working collaboratively with partner organizations and stakeholders to implement the Strategy and build a brighter future for Nunavimmiut.
